A few years ago, the Municipality of La Ceiba decided to create a beach park on the western part of the city. The beach that was for years called the beach at the Colonia los Maestros, was transformed, and renamed the Paseo de los Ceibeños. This is by far the best public beach in town. The interventions included a parking lot, benches, and public lighting. These basic improvements made the area much more attractive to locals. Together with good public security, with the municipal police present in the area, the formula created one of the most popular public spaces in the city. The only other public space that attracts as many locals is the Reynaldo Canales Boardwalk at the old Banana Dock.

A big “I love La Ceiba” sign on the beach has become a local icon. Tourists and locals flock to the Paseo de los Ceibeños to take a selfie of themselves at this site. Thus, they can prove that they have been to La Ceiba and keep the photo as a memory of the good times spent in the city. During Easter Week and the famous La Ceiba Carnival, the area is packed, with concerts often taking place here. Because this beach park is well lit at night, it is very safe, and it is common to see people here even after dark.

During the day, it is common to see street salespersons who put up a stall to sell their products. You can find anything from local handicrafts to fresh fruits, baleadas and charcoal broiled corn cobs. Thankfully, there are many trash cans throughout the park so please make sure you use them if you purchase anything and then need to dispose of your trash. On the main drive opposite of the beach you will find many different bars and restaurants. Most have a nice view of the beach. They are the perfect place to enjoy an ice-cold beer or a delicious lunch. For me, this is one of my favorite spots to chill out and simply enjoy the people having a good time in the park.

The Paseo de los Ceibeños in La Ceiba offers you something that few cities in the country do. The chance of enjoying the beach on the Caribbean Sea under the shade of a coconut tree. There are also a few hotels in the area, some of them right on the beach. Although the best beach hotel in La Ceiba, the Quinta Real Hotel is not in the area, it is close by. If you want to interact with locals and share some of their favorite public spaces in La Ceiba, then you should plan of visiting the Paseo de los Ceibeños when in La Ceiba.
