It makes me so mad every time someone asks me if the Lodge at Pico Bonito is open! Of course it is open, it never closed it doors. It is incredible how the news about it being in the process of closing over a year ago, had such a big impact, that nobody paid attention when they backtracked and decided they would not close and stay open! The Lodge at Pico Bonito became a icon for tourism in Honduras soon after in opened its doors. It was awarded the prestigious Premio Copan Award in its first year of operations. World famous travelers, of the like of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones have stayed at the Lodge at Pico Bonito several times. This business soon became a leading authority on birding as Honduras decided it wanted to promote this market niche to attact tourists.

The Lodge at Pico Bonito has a total of 22 rooms, a small conference room, a pool, a restaurant bar and souvenir shop. It also offers first class Spa service. Within its property, it has a butterfly house and a serpentary where you can see many of the resident snakes within Pico Bonito National Park. You can visit these two facilities without having to be a guest at the property. In addition, a network of trails, including some great birding towers allow you get up into the forest canopy for great birdwatching. This is one of the birding hotspots in Honduras, and certainly is THE hotspot in Atlantida. The strongly enforeced no hunting policy on their grounds has made it the best spot in Honduras to spot wildlife. This includes mammals, birds and reptiles. This was, after all, one of the objectives the investors had in mind when they decided to invest in the Lodge at Pico Bonito.

Not only is the Lodge at Pico Bonito the most important birding hotspot in Honduras. It also offers the largest group of professional birding guides in Honduras. They know how to identify the bird sounds, the trees where they hang out and where to find them. They also know the English names of each species and will help you find those unique birds that are not yet on your checklist. In addition to the birding trails, there are many other options that will take you to spectacular waterfalls. Perhaps the most spectacular of all are Unbeleivable Falls. It will take you better half of a day to hike to these falls and back, but it will be well worth the effort!
With the above facts made clear, you can imagine why I get upset when asked if the Lodge at Pico Bonito is open! It not only is open. Most of the original staff that has worked there since the originally opened their doors are still there. Furtheremore, the Lodge never closed!
