There are many different trails in Nombre de Dios National Park. The Rio Rafting Hotel Trail is probably one of the least visited, but easiest to get to! The Trail in in the Cangrejal River Valley area, within the premises of Hotel Rio Rafting. This is one of several hotels in the area. Getting to this Trail is very easy! Just go to the Hotel Rio Rafting, that is at km 7.7 of the La Ceiba to Yaruca road.
There is no fee to access this private trail, however the Hotel Rio Rafting has a policy that requires you to visit the trail with a guide. This is to ensure your safety and guarantee your enjoyment. The guide will cost you between 8 and 12 dollars per group, depending on the size of your party. I should add that the payment is directly for the guide, so you should feel you are helping the community! You can hire the guide directly at the hotel. Please take note that the Rio Rafting Hotel Trail is not an easy hike. There are some steep climbs that will test your physical condition!
If you are set on hiking the Rio Rafting Hotel Trail, just visit the hotel, they will arrange for your guide. Make sure you bring some water with you, as you will need. If you are a birder, make sure you bring your binoculars with you, as there are many birds to be seen! The Cangrejal River Valley is outstanding for birdwatching. A recent bird count spotted over 75 bird species in the trail! Plan on spending between 1 ½ and 2 hours on this trail.
After your hike, you will want a place to relax and have a drink and a bite. You will love the huge, open terrace at the Hotel Rio Rafting Restaurant. The view of el Bejuco Waterfall from there is outstanding. This is certainly one of the most scenic areas within Pico Bonito National Park. One of the great things about the Cangrejal River Valley is that you can enjoy both, Pico Bonito National Park and Nombre de Dios National Park. Choose between staying in one of the hotels in the Cangrejal River Valley or a hotel in town, as the ride is less that 30 minutes. However, you would not like to miss out on the opportunity to enjoy dawn at the Cangrejal River Valley.
