Few people are aware that you can do diving in Tela. Usually, we think of diving as an activity when we visit islands that are surrounded by coral reefs, such as Roatan, Utila and Cayos Cochinos. But I bet you never thought that you could do World Class diving in the Bay of Tela! It happens that one of the most pristine coral reefs in the Caribbean is within the Tela Bay. It is known as Capiro reef, and it is in an excellent state of conservation. There are several good reasons for this. First, we did not know it existed until very recently! Incredible, but true. There are so many things about the sea that we still do not know! A second very good reason for its pristine condition is the fact that it is far out, in an area where tourists and fishermen never visit.

Furthermore, if you are not a diver, then you take advantage and get scuba certified so that you can then visit this magnificent reef. The Tela Dive Center has its headquarters at the Honduras Shores Plantation complex, very close to the Garifuna Village of Tornabe. The dive center is very committed to sustainable tourism and is environmentally conscious. In addition to operating a variety of tours to the national parks around Tela, they have opened a coral aquarium in Tela. This is a first not only in Honduras, but in all Central America. There you will become familiar with some of the different corals that live in the Capiro Reef within the bay of Tela. The reef is out in open Waters, and there can be serious undercurrents in the area. Do not try to go out on your own! Make sure you go with the experts!
