The Cangrejal River is located between two national parks. Nombre de Dios and Pico Bonito National Parks. These Parks provide fantastic bird watching opportunities. Best of all, there are several outstanding lodges that are ideal for birdwatchers. The best area for birding in the Cangrejal River area is between Villas Pico Bonito and Omega Tours lodge.  However, there is also good birdwatching a bit further upriver, as far as the Village of Las Mangas.

According to ebird, there are Over 217 species reported at the Omega Tours Lodge alone! This even though there has not been a continuous effort to spot birds in the area. The fact that there are many creeks that feed from the parks into the Cangrejal River means that there is a perfect habitat for difficult to see birds. A perfect example is the sun bittern. This elusive bird loves to hang around forested creeks. Without doubt, one of the most common birds to be seen in the area is the keel billed toucan. These can be heard early in the morning.  You can find them patiently posing for photographers within easy site.
